Old Pictures: The Petronas Towers

Where are the towers?

Well, given that the above photo was taken in 1895, you may not be surprised to hear that they weren't built yet. This is a picture of the Selangor Turf Club, a horse-racing course in Kuala Lumpur. Here's that same spot a century later.

A lot has changed in Kuala Lumpur, and one of the most obvious is the addition of the Petronas Towers. It was built in 1996 as part of a wider project of city centre transformation. This had the old race track turned into an attractive and beautifully sculpted park, KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre) Park, with the Petronas Towers the standout landmark built on the edge.

Looking again at the above two photos, how do they even relate to each other? Well, let's take a look at a few other pre-tower photos.

This is from the 1970s. Don't be mistaken, the race track is not the large green patch at the bottom of the photo, it's the stretch you can just see slightly to the right of the middle of the picture. The dark patch of jungle around it is where the Petronas Towers are now.

Here's a straightforward picture of the race track, again in the 1970s.

This remained the case throughout the 1980s, and so we find ourselves now in 1991. The city has a few more skyscrapers, but the race track remains.

But not for long. By 1992, it was history.

The below pair of pictures help relate Kuala Lumpur before and after KLCC was built. A lot has changed.
